Most of the warm season varieties must be reproduced by sod or sprigs, in order to preserve its purity and qualities.

Attempts have been made to breed a Paspalum vaginatum variety reproduced by seed, but unsuccessfully, as such seed presents a very poor viability. Paspalum vaginatum genetic mechanism makes very difficult to ensure to preserve after different generations the same qualities.

Tifway 419 hybrid Bermuda is a true interspecific variety (Cynodon dactylon x Cynodon transvaalensis). True hybrids are sterile and so they must be reproduced by sod or sprigs.
Tifway 419 is much better than any other Cynodon dactylon improved variety, reproduced by seed, regarding overall texture, drought and salinity resistance.
